Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club
The Chanonry Peninsula on the Black Isle is barely wide enough for a road and a golf course — which makes what James Braid achieved here in 1932 all the more remarkable. Fortrose & Rosemarkie is the 15th oldest recorded golf club in the world, with origins dating to 1793, and its 18 holes occupy a narrow finger of land jutting into the Moray Firth, with the sea pressing in on almost every side.
The course measures just under 5,900 yards, but to treat it lightly would be a significant mistake. Small, subtle greens, strategic bunkering, dense island gorse and several blind approaches ensure that every hole demands thought and control. The views across the Firth to Nairn, Inverness and the distant hills are magnificent throughout, and the dolphins that regularly patrol the waters off Chanonry Point are a reminder that this is one of Scotland's most naturally beautiful settings.
The club has won Scotland's Best Golf Course award three times, most recently in 2024 — recognition well deserved for a venue that combines rich history, superb conditioning and outstanding value in a setting unlike anything else in the Highlands. Located just 20 minutes from Inverness, it is an easy and excellent addition to any Highland itinerary.
