Old Course

There are thousands of golf courses around the world, but it all began with one. The Old Course of St Andrews Links. Home of the Open Championship, every golfer worth his salt dreams of conquering its infamous Road Hole and crossing the ancient Swilcan Bridge to victory.

Dating back to the 15th century, the Old Course, or the Grand Old Lady, is the oldest and most highly regarded course in the world. It famously began with 22 holes, but in 1764 the first and last four holes were considered too short and were combined to create two in and two out instead. This set the 18-hold standard that we continue to adhere to today.

The classic links course is set against the rugged North Sea coast with vast greens (seven double and four single), devilish bunkers, and gingerly defined fairways. While the coastal scenery is certainly part of the Old Course’s appeal, the famous links landmarks like the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse steal the show.

The Old Course consistently ranks in the top 10, but most frequently within the top five of the Worldwide Top 100. Yes, it may have been pedestalled by its prestige and history, but the classic links is undoubtedly deserving of its place in the ranks. Although for most, it incites the same love affair it had with Bobby Jones. It can be frustrating at first, but it leaves you with a burning desire for more.
