Tróia Golf
Stretched along a pristine peninsula south of Lisbon, Tróia Golf is a championship links-style course that captures the wild beauty of Portugal's Sado Estuary coastline. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1980, this layout remains one of the Alentejo region's most celebrated courses – a dramatic blend of towering sand dunes, umbrella pines, and strategic seaside golf.
Located approximately 90 minutes south of Lisbon via a scenic ferry crossing from Setúbal, Tróia occupies a remote, tranquil peninsula where Atlantic beaches stretch endlessly and the pace of life slows to a coastal rhythm. The ferry crossing itself is a memorable part of the journey – a gentle prelude to the round ahead.
The course weaves through natural dune terrain, with fairways tumbling across elevation changes and several holes playing directly alongside the ocean. Strategic bunkering, firm-running turf, and ever-present coastal breezes demand thoughtful course management. The back nine is particularly memorable, with clifftop holes offering spectacular views across the estuary toward the Arrábida mountains.
Conditioning is excellent year-round, and the setting feels wonderfully unspoiled. The clubhouse is relaxed and welcoming, with fresh seafood and regional wines served overlooking the final holes.
Tróia is Portuguese links golf at its most natural and rewarding.
