Western Gailes
A classical Scottish links course, Western Gailes is a stunning strip of green nestled between a railway line and Ayrshire’s inspiring Firth of Clyde coastline. Looking out to the Isle of Arran, this historic course is not short of breathtaking views and challenging terrain. Established in 1897, the course and clubhouse have an esteemed heritage, but are known to be incredibly welcoming to visitors, who are very much treated like ‘members for the day.’
Western Gailes is played on an out-and-back layout, with the clubhouse sitting at its centre. You’ll definitely have to deal with more than one change in wind direction and take into account water on several holes, as well as bunkers and a spectacular view that is guaranteed to be a distraction. A particular highlight is the 7th hole, which is a typical links par 3. At 183 yards long, the hole is surrounded by six deep bunkers and is at the mercy of mother nature - should you be playing this hole when the wind is coming off the sea, you’ll be working hard to avoid some very nasty rough. Shaped by both nature and generations of play, Western Gailes is a must during any tour of golf’s own homeland.
